Pulse Oximeter
A pulse oximeter is a device that non-invasively measures hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO2). It can be used both in hospitals and at home. It is particularly useful for people with pulmonary and cardiovascular conditions. Pulse and saturation are measured by a special infrared sensor and if an abnormality is detected, the user is alerted by an alarm.
Using the appropriate SpO2 saturation sensor, the pulse rate, i.e., the number of heartbeats per minute, can be measured. The heart rate may be decreased or increased due to exertion, emotional state, medication, illness, etc. The pulse oximeter calculates a numerical value of %SpO2.
Exact value: above 95% - 99-100% during oxygen therapy.
Low values (especially below 90%) may indicate respiratory arrest/hypoxia.
